We started to work with Lorea to give our team some common language and understanding of social emotional learning (SEL) and how to support students with developing their emotional intelligence. Lorea taught us about the SEL standards and helped us select a curriculum that would be easy to implement and get started. We really valued the way she looked at the survey data with us to evaluate the effectiveness of our SEL program and her approach to delivering professional development. Lorea really knows her content, listens and adapts based on the needs of the school community.
We began working with Lorea during the 2013-2014 school year as a prelude to our SEL program. Lorea met with students, staff and parents to provide an overview of the CASEL core competencies and then worked with all stakeholders to develop a survey to administer to staff and students. Before the school year ended, she met with the administrative team and teacher leads and shared the results. Based on the results, she recommended a variety of curricula that would best meet our needs. The following school year, she conducted several workshops with staff and helped the new SEL teachers create a scope and sequence for their work. In addition, she developed specific lessons for me as the Principal to use with my Leadership Team. Without Lorea’s guidance and knowledge, our program would not be as successful as it is today.
Lorea is an outstanding consultant who works effectively and connects incredibly well with every constituency from teacher to administrator to parent to student. I welcome the many opportunities I have had to work with Lorea, including in two current research projects we are engaged in together. Her insights are superb. In addition, I hired Lorea to debrief the Education Vital Signs, Six Seconds school climate assessment for a local school. The feedback was terrific. I would encourage you to contact Lorea for all your school consultancy needs. You will not be disappointed.
Lorea came to my credentialing class to discuss Social Emotional Learning with our pre-service and intern teachers. She provided resources that could be utilized immediately in the classrooms and illustrated content-specific examples to show the role SEL plays in different classroom settings. My students left with a better understanding of what SEL is and why it is essential to integrate into their curricula. I would invite Lorea back to my credentialing class any time!
