From Overwhelmed to Intentional:
HEART Skills to Reclaim Your Energy and Purpose
From Overwhelmed to Intentional:
You’ve been managing — the demands, the stress, the expectations. Maybe for a long time. And somewhere along the way, the things that used to energize you started feeling like a weight.
What most people don’t realize is that this kind of exhaustion isn’t a willpower problem. It’s a skills gap. Not a gap in professional skills — but in the social and emotional skills that help us navigate stress, set boundaries, stay connected to what matters, and keep going with intention rather than just inertia.
The HEART in Mind model, developed by Dr. Lorea Martínez, identifies five of those skills. Together, they offer a path from chronic overwhelm toward greater balance, joy, and purpose, not by doing more, but by relating to yourself and your life differently.
HEART is an acronym. Each letter names one essential skill that any adult can learn and develop.
H Honor Your Emotions
This skill involves recognizing, naming, and appropriately expressing your feelings. Rather than suppressing emotions, you learn to treat them as “friends with important messages” and valuable signals that offer insight into your inner world.
E Elect Your Responses
This skill is about creating the space needed to move away from autopilot reactions toward constructive and safe decisions. It strengthens emotional regulation and reinforces your sense of choice.
A Apply Empathy
Empathy allows you to understand and value others’ perspectives while also extending compassion toward yourself. It deepens connection and reduces conflict.
R Reignite Your Relationships
This skill focuses on intentionally fostering connections, navigating conflict with care, and cultivating a sense of belonging in both personal and professional spaces.
T Transform with Purpose
This skill is about aligning your actions with your values and using your strengths to create meaningful impact. It serves as your internal compass for purposeful living.
