Liberating our HEARTs

“Education is the practice of freedom.” – Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire, renowned educator and philosopher, ignited a flame of hope for countless individuals, including myself, through his belief in education as a liberating force. His vision of a society where critical thinking, empathy, and social justice prevail resonates deeply with the core principles of Transformative Social and Emotional Learning (tSEL). In this post, we’ll explore how the HEART in Mind model can cultivate self-determined, compassionate, and engaged citizens, bringing Freire’s philosophy to our daily lives.

Freire emphasized the importance of self-reflection, awareness of societal forces, and the power of imagination to create a better future. These three pillars align with the HEART in Mind model’s focus on developing individuals’ social and emotional capacity:

By cultivating emotional intelligence and empathy, we empower ourselves and our students to examine the world around us critically. We become aware of the systemic factors that shape our lives and develop the capacity to challenge injustice. When we foster a sense of purpose and agency, we inspire students to become active participants in creating a more equitable and just society. Learn more here.

Let’s take a closer look at each HEART skill:

Honoring Your Emotions: Self-reflection is the cornerstone of personal growth and social change. By acknowledging and understanding our emotions, we gain insights into our values, beliefs, and biases. This self-awareness empowers us to explore the multiple layers of our identities, respond thoughtfully to challenges, and build stronger relationships in across communities.

Electing Your Responses: Developing the ability to choose our responses rather than reacting impulsively is crucial for navigating complex social, emotional, and political landscapes. By understanding the factors conditioning our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, we can make conscious decisions that align with our values and goals.

Applying Empathy: Empathy is the bridge that connects us to others. By cultivating empathy, we develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and experiences; we feel what others feel. This enables us to show care for each other and cultivate trust, foundational ingredients to creating strong relationships and inclusive communities.

Reigniting Your Relationships: Meaningful connections are essential for personal and collective well-being. By nurturing positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families, we create a supportive environment where everyone feels seen, valued, respected, and cared for.

Transforming with Purpose: Freire’s vision of a just and equitable society requires individuals who are purpose-driven and committed to making a difference. By helping students discover their passions and talents, we empower them to become agents of change.

As educators, we have the incredible opportunity to shape the minds and hearts of the next generation. By incorporating SEL into our classrooms and liberating our own HEART, we can create learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Let’s use these HEART skills to build a more just, compassionate, and equitable world.
