Do Your Students Know Their Strengths?

In my doctoral research, I encountered a powerful quote from a teacher that highlighted the profound connection between SEL and academic achievement. This teacher emphasized the importance of self-awareness as a foundational skill for effective learning.

“I think that SEL is a foundation you need to have before you can get to the academic learning (…) It also reinforces the study skills that they use in order to learn. So knowing their emotions and knowing their needs has to come first and then it also goes hand in hand with the academic learning when they know their strengths and weaknesses and they can use those in order to learn better.”

The Importance of Self-Awareness

The ability to identify strengths and weaknesses is crucial for students’ academic success. As adults, we often struggle with self-reflection, yet we expect students to effortlessly acknowledge their challenges and work on improvement.
