Doing Hard Things: A Celebration

Teaching with the HEART in Mind is turning three!
Three years have flown by since Teaching with the HEART in Mind first hit the shelves, and what a journey it has been. As I sit here reflecting on this milestone, I’m filled with gratitude for the support and profound impact this book has had on educators and school leaders worldwide.
When I set out to write this book, my goal was simple: to provide the guidance and inspiration I wish I had as a teacher. Little did I know the challenges and doubts that would accompany this endeavor.
There were moments when I questioned if my message would resonate or if I had anything new to offer on the topic of SEL. Other times, I feared “putting myself out there” and being criticized or ridiculed. But I persevered, driven by the belief and personal experience that SEL can truly transform lives.
Yet, in facing these challenges, I discovered the true essence of resilience and growth. I learned that sometimes, the most rewarding endeavors are the ones that push us outside our comfort zones, urging us to confront our fears and doubts. It’s in these moments of discomfort that we find the opportunity to evolve, to learn, and to become stronger versions of ourselves.
So, if you’re considering embarking on your own challenging journey, here are three pieces of advice to keep in mind:
- Embrace discomfort: Growth rarely happens within our comfort zones. Embrace the discomfort of uncertainty and challenge, knowing that it’s a sign you’re pushing yourself to grow.
- Foster resilience: Setbacks are inevitable, but it’s how we respond to them that defines us. Cultivate resilience by viewing obstacles as opportunities to learn and adapt.
- Seek support: You don’t have to go it alone. Surround yourself with a supportive community that can offer guidance, encouragement, and perspective when you need it most.
As Teaching with the HEART in Mind celebrates its third birthday, let’s raise a toast to the power of perseverance, the beauty of growth, and the impact of teaching and leading with HEART. Here’s to embracing challenges, fostering resilience, and continuing to make a difference in the lives of students and educators alike.
