Are We Facing an Emotional Recession?

Did you know there’s growing evidence of a global “emotional recession”?

This isn’t a financial downturn, but a decline in emotional intelligence (EQ) as measured by the world’s largest EQ study, the State of the Heart report from Six Seconds.

Based on data from over 277,000 people in 169 countries, the report shows a concerning trend:

Global EQ scores have dropped for four straight years. From 2019 to 2023, global average emotional intelligence scores declined by 5.54%. In addition, scores on every individual social and emotional competency also dropped.

This means people are struggling to stay optimistic, manage their emotions, connect with others, and find purpose. Sound familiar?

But the report gets more specific: Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, faces a unique mental and emotional health challenge fueled by loneliness and social isolation. This translates to the workplace too, where over half of Gen Z report low job satisfaction.

What does this mean for education?

It highlights the critical need to equip our educators and students with the essential life skills of emotional intelligence. By implementing SEL programs and practices, we can help them navigate these challenges, build resilience, and cultivate a thriving life.

If you want to learn how,  join me on July 9th for a free conversation with Ilaria Boffa about this report and its implications for students, educators, and schools worldwide. You can RSVP here.

Look forward to seeing you there!
