Helping Students Beat Test Stress

It’s testing season, which means that students are probably dealing with a good amount of stress and performance anxiety. Even for students who feel confident about their skills, taking a standardized test can be a nerve-racking experience, which may hinder students’ ability to show their best work.

In our latest video, I tell the story of making a big mistake during my university entrance exam because I panicked and couldn’t think straight. At the time, I had no tools to calm my nervous system, so I ended up messing up the test.

The good news is that teachers can do many things to support students in navigating testing season with resilience and confidence. By creating a calm environment, teaching stress management techniques, and focusing on effort, not only test results, teachers can provide the conditions that will support students to shine in their exams.

While your role as an educator is to support the whole child, not just their academic performance, students do need to take standardized assessments, and we hope that they perform to the best of their ability.
