Tips for Student Anxiety

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of emotional well-being for everyone in our school communities, especially our students.
We know that many students today are navigating significant pressures, from academic demands to social anxieties and uncertainties about the future. As educators, your role in fostering a supportive and understanding learning environment is more critical than ever.
Many of our young people are dealing with increased levels of anxiety, an emotion that is not like others–the thoughts and feelings that induce anxiety tend to be about the future. We typically perceive a threat or danger, and we get worried that we may not be able to handle the situation or task.
While anxiety may not seem like a helpful emotion, it actually helps us by focusing our attention on potential problems, so we are alert and ready to take action. However, if we don’t know how to handle it appropriately, it can hinder our confidence and impact our ability to perform at our best.
In this video, I explain the unique nature of anxiety compared to other emotions and provide three actionable strategies you can implement immediately to support your students in navigating anxiety effectively, empowering them to do their best.
